What Is Baby-Led Newborn Photography?

A Gentle, Natural Approach to Newborn Photos.

What is baby-led newborn photography?

Baby-led newborn photography means your baby sets the pace.

Instead of forcing stiff or complicated poses, I follow their natural movements, tiny expressions, sleepy stretches, and curled-up little moments. If your baby needs to eat, cuddle, stretch, cry, or simply stay awake for a while, that’s okay.

There is no perfect newborn session. There is only your baby, exactly as they are.

I’ve been photographing Edmonton newborns and families since 2010, and over the years I’ve learned that the photographs parents love most are often the simplest ones. The tiny yawn. The furrowed brow. The way their fingers curl around yours. The expressions that already feel completely familiar.

Does my baby need to sleep for newborn photos?

Not at all.

Sleepy babies are lovely to photograph, but awake babies are just as beautiful. Some of my favourite images are the wide-eyed looks, stretches, little smiles, and curious expressions that happen when a newborn is awake.

I never want parents to feel like their baby is doing something “wrong” during a session. Babies are allowed to be babies here.

What if my baby cries?

Then we stop.

We feed, soothe, cuddle, change a diaper, or simply give them a minute.

Newborn sessions are never rushed. I leave plenty of time for breaks because your baby’s comfort matters more than getting through a list of poses.

Do you pose newborn babies?

I gently guide babies into comfortable, natural positions, but I don’t force complicated poses.

I prefer photographs that show the way your baby naturally curls, stretches, sleeps, and settles into your arms.

The goal is not to make every baby look the same. It’s to photograph what makes yours feel like yours.

What does a baby-led newborn session feel like?

Slow.

Warm.

Quiet.

There’s time to feed. Time to cuddle. Time for siblings to warm up. Time for parents to breathe.

I want the session to feel less like a photoshoot you have to perform for and more like a morning spent simply being with your new baby.

Why I photograph newborns this way

When I had my first baby, I thought I wanted the same elaborate newborn photos I had seen everywhere else.

But the photographs that meant the most to me were the simple ones. The ones where I could see him.

That changed the way I photographed babies and eventually became the heart of Vintage Duck Photography.

I want you to remember how tiny they were, how they fit against you, and all the little expressions that already felt so familiar.
